Perhaps it’s the Wisconsin in me, but finding a sausage better than a beer soaked Johnsville brat is nearly impossible. Every once in a while I get a major brat craving and it has to be taken care of right then in there. That’s exactly what happened this past weekend.
I like Johnsville original flavored brats boiled in Miller Lite, but you could experiment different beers and sausages if you’d like. The brats are boiled with onions, which could be used as a topping. I, however, just end up discarding them and filling my bun with sauerkraut instead. These would be a great addition to any Fourth of July BBQ!
Beer Brats
Ingredients:
2-12 oz bottles or cans of beer
1 onion, thinly sliced
2 cloves of garlic, smashed
1 package of brats (5 brats)
5 brat buns
sauerkraut
ketchup
mustard
Put beer, onions and garlic into a large pot and bring to a boil. Add brats and cover. Simmer for about 10-12 minutes, flipping brats at least once.
Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grill brats until evenly browned on all sides. Warning: the brats contain a lot of fat so there will be massive flames. Don’t worry, they are resilient to burning!
Serve brats on buns with lots of sauerkraut, ketchup and mustard.
