I’ve come across a least a dozen different red wine sangria recipes since I started following food blogs last year. Unfortunately, most of them contain alcohol that I wouldn’t normally stock in our house (i.e. brandy) so I’ve often been turned from by making it. I’ve thought about creating my own version, but I didn’t want to stray too far from an authentic taste.
I came across this recipe on allrecipes and did my research through reading all of the reviewer’s comments. Many people said, “this tastes just like the sangria I had in Spain.” I’ve never been to Spain, so I can’t compare, but if enough people think it tastes authentic, I’m convinced! The best part about this recipe is you may even have all of the ingredients in your home right now. So…what are you waiting for?!
Just a warning: I’m not a big drinker so take this as you will, but I was feeling it quite a bit after one glass. I made it the next day with white wine instead of red, and I kicked the alcohol down to 1 cup instead of 1 1/2 cups. It tastes equally as good with both amounts of alcohol.
Sangria
Ingredients:
1 lime, sliced thin
1 lemon, sliced thin
1 orange, sliced thin
1/2 cup of sugar
1 1/2 cups of rum (I did half spiced rum and half regular rum)
1 bottle of red wine (I used Cabernet Sauvignon), chilled
1 cup orange juice, chilled
Start by placing the fruit slice in a large pitcher. Sprinkle sugar over the fruit and pour the rum on top. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
After the fruit has chilled, break fruit up a bit with a wooden spoon to release its juices. Pour in orange juice and wine and stir well. Serve over ice.
